The use of OC lands requires a Land Use Permit, some activities are not allowed or may be restricted to certain tracts of land. Use of OC lands without a permit is considered trespass. Trespassers may be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. OC reserves the right to withhold approval of any permit request.
Ounalashka Corporation is the major land owner on Unalaska, Amaknak and Sedanka Islands. Within reason, Ounalashka Corporation land is open to shareholders, tribal members and non-shareholders for use in subsistence and recreational activities. Subsistence activities include salmon fishing, gathering foods in the intertidal zone (such as clams, mussels, sea urchins, chitons, seaweeds, etc.), collection of greens and herbs, and berry picking.
Litter, terrain damage from four-wheelers, snowmobiles and motorcycles, disturbance of archaeological sites, irresponsible campfires, and the general disregard for private property prompted OC’s management and board of directors to launch a campaign to educate the general public in polite land use.
Policies were adopted that prohibited littering, vandalism, graffiti, and vehicular off-road use of lands. Security officers keep an eye on activities on our land. To track and control land use, OC has implemented a permitting system. OC issues permits for recreational use for a very nominal fee, and the permits are free to shareholders and their descendants. The fees collected do not come anywhere near paying for the retention of the land security officers, but are a gentle reminder to those who use OC land that it is private land. The daily and short-term permits also aid local authorities in the event of an overdue hiker or camper.
We welcome you and hope you have a safe and wonderful stay! We ask you to respect this land as it is our home.
