Gertrude Svarny was elected to the Board of Directors in 1981. She served two full-terms to 1987, during which time she served as Vice President in 1983 and 1984, Co-chairman and Acting President in 1984, and as Chairman in 1985 to 1986. After a small break, she was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Board in 1990 and has served ever since. Her current term began in 2008 and expires in 2011.
Gert serves on the Budget, Audit, Political, and Shareholder Planning committees. Additionally, she serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of Dutch Harbor Aggregate Company, Inc., the Vice President of Dutch Harbor Development Corporation, and the president of Little Brazil Corporation, all wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Ounalashka Corporation.
Since 1980, Gert has been a self-employed artist. She works with ivory, stone, wood, and bone, and weaves traditional Unangam baskets. Her work has been shown internationally, and is included in collections owned by the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, British Petroleum, Ounalashka Corporation, the City of Unalaska, the Aleutian Housing Authority, the Rasmussen Foundation and Unalaska City Schools. She is a member of the Holy Ascension of Christ Orthodox Cathedral Church Council.
A retrospective of Gert's work was held at the Museum of the Aleutians. It opened on June 2, 2006, and ran until mid-August 2006.
Gert received the 2008 Governor’s Awards for Native Arts, which was presented by then-lieutenant governor Sean Parnell in October. The Governor’s Awards for the Arts & Humanities is an annual series of awards honoring the contribution of individuals and groups that ‘enrich the civic, intellectual, and cultural life of all Alaskans through the wisdom and techniques of the humanities.’
